Abraham the
Great Prophet 1
The night was clear, the stars were shining, calm wind was
blowing, but there were lights in a house near the temple. The highest priest
Azar was sitting near a closed door of a room, looking impatiently at the stars
through the window. At that time back, the post of
high priest was a very deirable post. The priests were as strong as kings.
Even the kings had to ask for their consent before starting a new project. Azar
was worried; suddenly the door of the room opened and a slave girl came out
from the other room. She bowed and said, “It is a boy.” Azar’s face lit up with
joy; he removed his pearl necklace and gave it to the slave girl. The news of
the birth spread like wildfire in the town; singing with tambourines and
dancing filled the temple. Sorcerers from all over the country came to show
their tricks. Everyone was rejoicing and celebrating the birth of Azar’s son. The
loud music and merrymaking could be heard in the far corners of the city.
Azar went in the room to see the child. He saw a beautiful
and healthy baby wrapped in linen, lying near his mother. Azar took the newborn
in his lap and named him Abraham. As the boy grew, his father became very fond
of him. The boy had many exceptional qualities: keen intellect, brilliant
reasoning power, calm temperament, affable nature, and such complete control of
himself that no event could upset it. All these qualities made him a favorite
of his father, who saw the fulfillment of his ambition in him. A great bond of
love rose between father and son; they promised to help and protect each other
through every ordeal in the future.
