Abraham the Great Prophet 8

(2-124)(6-83)(21-51)(19-49)(37-84)(11-75)

In order to give a complete picture of Abraham, the Quran gives a list of attributes he possessed. He was given reasoning powers, as well as the potentiality to accept the truth and to be always a truthful person, with a heart which could live in peace and harmony with others. He was never to lose control, and he always remained balanced, confident and compassionate. He concentrated all his abilities on obeying the laws of one God and left everything that proved to be a hindrance to his mission.

Abraham’s life is like a minaret of light in a stormy sea of temptations in the world, guiding the lost ships to their destiny. It shows the height of human potentiality actualized by one man. The Quran says Abraham was not a man; he was like a nation in his revolutionary work and ideas.

Abraham made great sacrifices to be upright and true to his ideal. In return, God rewarded him handsomely. The bounties and blessings he poured on him were numerous. Allah was so happy with his performances that he declared, “I am going to bestow the title Imam (leader) of humanity upon you.” “What about my children?” asked Abraham. “My covenant does not cover those who disobey the law,” God said in answer. The word imam has another meaning also. When a mason is building a wall, he wants to know whether it is straight or crooked. A device is used to check it. This device is known as an imam. In other words, the actions of Abraham are the criterion for human beings to judge their actions.

God told Muhammad (peace be upon him) to follow the ways of Abraham, because he had full confidence in God, and he never looked anywhere else for guidance. Abraham got a big share of intelligence and guidance from the almighty God. No doubt it was a precious gift, which he used for spreading the truth.  God ordered all Muslims to follow the footprints of Abraham. He was given the best children, Ismail and Isaac, and both were prophets. His grandson Jacob was also a prophet. Moreover, a line of prophets was established in his descendants. Fame, money, kingship, honor, power, wisdom and whatever a human being can aspire to were given in abundance to Abraham and his descendants. Above all, he will be rewarded in the life to come.

The truth is that the entire magnificent universe is following the laws of God; the creator knows the safest way of development for his creation. His laws are the best for humanity and all those who follow them whole heartily enjoy the good results. Abraham’s life is a sparkling example of it. He sacrificed a lot for the sake of truth, and left many precious things to achieve the goal; but the reward was also overwhelming. God gave or rather poured his blessings on him and declared that he is his friend. The exaltation of Abraham shows the consequences of obedient and faithful following of the directions of God. It is a thing to be remembered at every difficult turn and corner of life.
